PRESENTATION

The issue of identity is a fascinating and very complex one. More fluid than fixed, our identity consists of innumerable defining characteristics that make up the whole of who we are at any given moment.

These fragments of self include our sexuality, gender, sense of belonging to a particular culture, nation, religion, family, social class and other groups. Our identity includes our looks, personality, beliefs, fears and very little, if any of it, is permanent. Nowadays with so many sources of information at hand and access to surgery, one can alter everything from gender to height and/or body shape to face image.

Identity, more specifically virtual identity, is now a key issue for citizens, organisations, businesses and governments. The media exploits the relationship between identity and privacy in an information intensive society that, in the name of security, better marketing and/or more efficient delivery of goods and services, is relentlessly tracking physical persons, their financial transactions and their whereabouts.

Diving into this subject, Contém Dança created the show “A ≡ A”. The title refers to Aristotle’s “Law of Identity” which states that an object is the same as itself. A is A. We believe therefore that each person is unique and that identity is the cumulative result of unmeasurable complex factors. Furthermore, even if they could be measured, each of us has the ability to pursue our own curiosities, have other opinions or dealing with challenges in different ways. Your identity is only equal to your identity. You are you.

The project seeks not only to be a success on stage but also to research theatrical language, discussing its impact on the contemporary art scene in what concerns the role of the performer creator. A=A is a work in progress. Like you and I.
